This week, I want to talk about twitter, the digital divide, and academic software.
I first created a twitter when I was around 14 years old. I used it for a while but ended up deleting my account a year or two ago, just because I thought I spent too much time scrolling through to see what people were saying or what new memes were being posted. Most of my twitter interactions were with my friends, but I also followed pages that posted funny content, or things about food. So, for me, much of it was just a tool used to fuel my procrastination. However, there were a few things I would consider to actually be beneficial about twitter. Because I never really watched the news, twitter was usually my biggest resource for finding out what was going on in the world around me, and twitter. Obviously, some of the information being spread across twitter was biased, but I still was able to find out a bit about what was going on, which often led to me researching more about the event. It also was a useful tool for me in school, as my high school posted lots of important information on twitter, whether it be canceled school days for weather, spirit week themes, or upcoming events and activities. In this way, twitter would be very helpful in my career, allowing me to broadcast important information to students and parents via social media.
The digital divide is a very real problem we run into these days, especially with technology use becoming more and more necessary for many different jobs, and even in the classroom. While many students have access to technology and the internet at home, many students don't have this luxury, making it difficult to complete certain assignments, use online study tools, or contact their teachers. This divide is often due to class differences, with upper and middle-class families having the funds to provide these resources to their children, while lower-class families do not have the funds. As a teacher, this is something I will have to keep in mind. I will make an effort to assign homework and projects that can be completed without internet access, and provide students with adequate class time to use the internet when it is necessary for a particular assignment.
There are many different types of academic software that can really improve student learning if used well. One type of academic software I have found to be very useful is Microsoft office. With this software, students or teachers have access to Word, Excel, Powerpoint, OneNote, Outlook, and much more. These apps can be used by the teacher to make tests, send emails, keep track of data, and make interesting presentations for class, however, they can also be really valuable to students, allowing them to use their own creative ideas to write a paper, create a brochure, make a presentation, take notes, connect with teachers or peers, and so much more. This would be a very useful tool in my future classroom. Another type of academic software that I believe would be very useful in the classroom would be something like Khan Academy. Khan Academy can be used to help students obtain a better understanding of what they are learning in class, by providing videos of step-by-step examples and opportunities for extra practice.
