Blog Journal 6

For this week's journal, I am going to discuss teacher pages on school websites, how I envision myself using technology to fulfill my professional responsibilities in the future, as well as the Technology Sandbox that we visited in class last week!

Teacher pages on school websites can be really useful for students and parents to stay updated about class information and activities.  I visited a few of the class pages from an elementary school in Atwater, Ohio (http://www.viking.portage.k12.oh.us/elementary-school-class-pages).  The one that I want to talk about specifically, is Mrs. Thora Green's 5th-grade class page. Here is a link to her page:

So Mrs. Green shares all kinds of necessary information for students and parents on her website.  When you first access the page, you see a little about her, as well as her contact information.  On the left side you can find tabs that take you to another page with information like the classroom calendar, classroom procedures, useful links, current topics, and more.  It looks like Mrs. Green updates the website fairly often, making this a great way for her to communicate with parents, as well as act as a useful resource for students to access information.

Next, I want to talk about my plans for my technology use in my professional career.  I plan on teaching English as a second language in another country in the future, so there are definitely many different ways in which I can implement technology into my classroom.  Presentations are always good, regardless of the subject, so this would obviously be a very good resource for me.  However, because language learning is so interactive, it is important to implement interactive activities into the classroom so that the students are putting what they are learning to good use.  So, as an ESL teacher, I would encourage apps like Duolingo, as well as interactive games like Kahoot, or even exposure to movies and music to allow students to develop a better understanding of the English language.

Lastly, the Technology Sandbox has lots of different pieces of technology that could be implemented in the classroom.  One piece of technology that I found particularly neat was the Virtual Reality headset.  This type of technology can be used to take a student to a particular place or time period, so they can experience what they are learning firsthand.  For example, a United States History teacher could find a Civil War simulation or something like that, and allow their students to see and experience an event firsthand.  The MERGE Cube is also a really interesting add-on to the VR headset, or just a phone, that allows students to have more hands-on interactions with the material they are learning in class, as the cube truly comes to life.
