Blog Journal 3

For my third blog post, I want to talk about ELA technology standards, the CPALMS Educator Toolkit, and my last EME2040 assignment - a newsletter design!

Though we often don't pair technology with ELA, they really tend to work hand-in-hand.  In fact, within the ELA standards posted by the Florida Department of Education is a column dedicated entirely to technology.  When looking at the technology standards for 12th grade ELA, I found that most of them I have had previous experience with, am comfortable with, and therefore would be comfortable with teaching.  For example, online dictionaries and thesauruses, textbooks, graphics software, presentation creators, search engines, and citation creators have all been frequently used throughout my educational experience, and I could easily teach my students to use these tools.  However, I have limited knowledge of spreadsheet and data analysis programs such as Excel or Tuva, and would definitely have to learn some more before instructing my students on using these programs.

The CPALMS Educator toolkit has lots of really useful instructional resources within it.  Under the resources tab, there are tabs for many different subject areas.  Because I want to teach ESL, I explored the English Language Development tab.  There are lots of tutorials for different levels of ESL that would be very useful for me in my future classroom.

For assignment 1 we had to to make a class newsletter design.  Screenshots of mine are posted below!  I was really happy with how it turned out.  My newsletter was for a first-grade class, so it was very fun and colorful.  One thing I would change about it would probably be the formatting of the second page because it isn't as clean and neat as the first page is.  Regardless, this was an awesome exercise to practice making a newsletter, something that will be very helpful for me in my future teaching career!  It also allowed me to learn my way around Microsoft Word a bit better, which is also very important!

  1. CPALMS is a big library for teachers in Florida. Unfortunately, a lot of teachers are not aware of them.
